Heuristics – Boundaries in Social Research

On 28 May 2026 the next edition of Heuristics, a series of UW Doctoral Schools’ seminars initiated by the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Professor Alojzy Z. Nowak, and organised under his patronage, took place. During the meeting entitled Boundaries in Social Research the doctoral students form Doctoral School of Social Sciences presented the results of their research in the presence and with the substantive support of their supervisors:

  • Michelle Mbazuigwe, M.A., with her supervisor, Dr Ewelina Biczyńska (Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies): “The Boundaries of Formality and Informality in Urban Space: factors and mechanisms of the persistence of liminal spaces: the example of Lagos”;
  • Mateusz Jeżowski, M.A., with his supervisor, Dr hab. Magdalena Dudkiewicz, UW Professor (Institute of Applied Social Sciences): “How Can Technology Determine the Boundaries of a Social Phenomenon? An Attempt to Answer Based on the Analysis of Volunteering Mediated and Completed Online”;
  • Emilia Michałuszko, M.A., with her supervisor, Dr hab. Marcin Krajewski (Faculty of Law and Administration): “Civil Law Regulation of Prostitution – Excessive Interference or Necessity?”;
  • Mariusz Kierasiński, M.A., with his supervisor, Prof. Dr hab. Jarosław Kilias (Faculty of Sociology): “Between Visibility and Recognition: Sociology in the DPRK and the Limits of Academic Reflection”.

Apart from a large number of doctoral students, the event was attended by the Vice-rector for Doctoral and Legal affairs, Dr hab. Adam Niewiadomski, prof. ucz., the heads of Doctoral Schools at the UW and supervisors.
